ActiveCampaign Pricing Explained: Which Plan Should You Choose?

ActiveCampaign Pricing Explained: Which Plan Should You Choose?

Choosing marketing automation software is one thing. Figuring out which plan you actually need is another.

That's particularly true with ActiveCampaign because the platform can support everything from relatively straightforward email marketing to sophisticated customer journeys, AI-assisted marketing, CRM integrations, and WhatsApp messaging.

The good news is that you don't necessarily need the most expensive plan.

The better question is:

What are you actually trying to accomplish?

Let's break down the current plans and figure out which one makes the most sense for your business.

Note: Plans, features, contact limits, and prices can change. Rather than relying on a static dollar amount in this article, I'd recommend checking the latest options directly through ActiveCampaign before purchasing.

How ActiveCampaign Pricing Works

One important thing to understand is that pricing isn't simply about choosing a feature tier.

Your requirements matter too, particularly the number of contacts you intend to manage.

As of 2026, the core Email offering is divided into four primary tiers:

Starter, Plus, Pro, and Enterprise.

There are also optional capabilities and add-ons depending on your plan and requirements, including enhanced CRM functionality, SMS, transactional email, custom reporting, and AI-related functionality.

So don't choose based purely on the name of a plan.

Choose based on what your marketing operation needs to do.

Starter: Best for Businesses Getting Started

The Starter plan is exactly what its name suggests.

It's designed for businesses that want to begin using ActiveCampaign for personalized email marketing without immediately needing its more sophisticated capabilities.

You get core functionality around email marketing and marketing automation, along with limited segmentation and access to some of the platform's Active Intelligence capabilities.

However, there's an important limitation: Starter currently allows five actions per automation.

That's perfectly reasonable for simple workflows, but it can become restrictive once you start designing more elaborate customer journeys.

I'd consider Starter for:

  • Solo entrepreneurs

  • Very small businesses

  • New email marketers

  • Businesses migrating away from basic newsletter software

  • Companies that only need simple automations

If all you want is a welcome series, basic follow-ups, newsletters, and relatively straightforward email automation, Starter may be all you need.

Plus: My Sweet Spot for Many SMBs

For many small and medium-sized businesses, Plus is where things get much more interesting.

This tier removes the five-action automation restriction and provides unlimited automation actions. It also introduces standard segmentation, landing pages, and broader functionality for businesses ready to take automation seriously.

That's a meaningful difference.

Imagine someone fills out a form on your website.

You could automatically:

  • Tag the contact

  • Send a personalized email

  • Wait two days

  • Check whether they engaged

  • Branch the journey based on behavior

  • Send another message

  • Update customer information

  • Trigger another workflow

Suddenly, you're not simply sending emails.

You're building customer journeys.

For a growing SMB that wants to use ActiveCampaign as a genuine marketing automation platform, Plus is probably the first plan I'd seriously evaluate.

Pro: For Businesses Ready for Advanced Marketing

Pro takes things another step further.

This plan is geared toward companies that aren't simply automating marketing—they're actively optimizing it.

According to the current feature lineup, Pro includes advanced segmentation, unlimited automation actions, landing pages, predictive and conditional content, attribution and conversion tracking, and broader CRM and ecommerce integration capabilities. It currently includes three users as well.

This makes Pro particularly attractive for established marketing teams.

I'd consider it if you're:

  • Running sophisticated nurture programs

  • Managing multiple customer segments

  • Operating ecommerce campaigns

  • Measuring conversions and attribution

  • Personalizing content based on customer behavior

  • Coordinating marketing across a larger team

At this level, ActiveCampaign starts feeling less like an email platform and much more like a serious marketing automation engine.

Enterprise: When Scale and Governance Matter

Enterprise is designed for organizations with more sophisticated requirements.

It builds on the lower tiers with capabilities such as premium segmentation, custom objects, Single Sign-On (SSO), premium CRM and ecommerce integrations, and a dedicated account team. The current plan includes five users.

For the average small business, that's probably unnecessary.

But for larger organizations, those capabilities can become important.

Enterprise makes more sense when you're dealing with things like:

  • Larger databases

  • Complex customer structures

  • Multiple marketing stakeholders

  • Advanced security requirements

  • Custom data models

  • Enterprise integrations

  • Greater governance requirements

At this point, you're no longer choosing software simply because you need email marketing.

You're choosing infrastructure for your marketing operation.

Don't Forget About WhatsApp

This is one of the most interesting parts of the current ActiveCampaign offering.

WhatsApp Messaging can be purchased without an Email plan, meaning a business primarily interested in WhatsApp doesn't necessarily have to buy the entire email marketing stack.

There are currently three WhatsApp tiers: Core, Advanced, and Premium.

Core is designed for getting started with WhatsApp automation and chatbots. Advanced adds capabilities for more sophisticated automation and team workflows, while Premium adds features such as SSO and enterprise-level support.

You can also combine WhatsApp with Plus, Pro, or Enterprise Email plans.

I think that's a fantastic option for businesses where WhatsApp is already a major customer communication channel.

What About CRM and Sales?

Another pricing consideration is CRM functionality.

You shouldn't assume that every sales feature is automatically included simply because you're paying for an Email plan.

The current offering includes enhanced CRM add-ons for functionality such as pipeline management and sales engagement, depending on your base plan.

That means you should map out your requirements before buying.

Ask yourself:

Do I need marketing automation?

Do I need sales pipeline management?

Do I need WhatsApp?

Do I need SMS?

Do I need advanced reporting?

Your answers will determine your actual software investment far better than simply looking at the advertised starting price.

Which Plan Would I Choose?

For a very small business primarily interested in newsletters and basic automation, I'd start by evaluating Starter.

For an SMB that genuinely wants to automate marketing and customer journeys, I'd look closely at Plus.

For a mature marketing team that needs advanced segmentation, attribution, predictive functionality, and more sophisticated campaign orchestration, Pro is likely the better fit.

And Enterprise?

I'd reserve that for organizations that genuinely need enterprise-level integrations, governance, security, custom objects, and support.

There's no prize for buying more software than you need.

Start Small and Grow Into It

One of the reasons I like ActiveCampaign for SMBs is that you don't have to design your ultimate marketing technology stack on day one.

Start with the problems you have today.

Maybe that's simply sending better emails.

Then you introduce automation.

Then segmentation.

Then customer journeys.

Maybe WhatsApp becomes important.

Maybe your sales team needs CRM functionality.

Your technology can mature alongside your business.

Final Thoughts

So, which ActiveCampaign plan should you choose?

For most businesses, the answer comes down to automation complexity.

Starter gets you into the ecosystem.

Plus unlocks much more serious automation.

Pro gives sophisticated marketing teams advanced tools for personalization and optimization.

Enterprise provides the governance and flexibility larger organizations need.

And the standalone WhatsApp options create an interesting alternative for businesses that primarily communicate with customers through messaging.

The best approach is to avoid paying for features simply because they sound impressive.

Instead, map your customer journey, identify what you actually want to automate, and choose the plan that supports those requirements.

If you're still unsure, start by exploring ActiveCampaign and testing the platform before deciding how much functionality your business really needs.
